During a normal day-shift
at Seymour an officer can expect a minimum of three to four accident calls. Most of these accidents are what's considered
a simple property damage accident. This means that a vehicle collides with a stationary or static object along the road,
or two vehicles collide while in a parking lot or at an intersection. The accidents are routinely handled by the on-duty
shift officers within a matter of a few minutes. But, there are times where more serious circumstances are involved.
The Seymour
Police Department has recognized that not all accidents are simple and routine. There are times where serious bodily
injury, or in the worst case, a fatality, has occurred. Because of these instances the Vehicle Accident
Investigation Team was formed. It consists of four officers who have been specially trained to investigate these
types of accidents.

When investigating
a serious bodily injury or fatal accident, it requires a lot of time for an officer to take specific measurements.
The road or lane must be shut-down for an average of 2+ hours due to these collisions. They are initially
investigated as a potential crime until it can be ruled as an accident. This method of operation allows the scene and
any evidence contained within it to be preserved. Points of impact, points of initial observation, skid marks, vehicle
angle, debris, vehicle damage, and distance traveled are but just a few points of information required to conduct a proper
evaluation of the collision.

Since the primary responsibility
of an on-duty officer is to respond to complaints, deploying this team frees the on-duty officers to respond to the complaints
as needed rather than requiring their presence at the scene for traffic control and investigation. Plainly, quick response
by on-duty officers to further calls allows for timely resolution of complaints for the community when this team arrives
and takes over.
