The Seymour
S.W.A.T. Team is a highly trained tactical unit used for exigent and volatile
situations. The situations include but are not limited to high-risk warrant service, narcotic warrant service, barricaded
subject and hostage rescue. The team at the Seymour Police Department consists of tactically trained entry officers,
negotiators, snipers and command personnel.
The team was established in 2003 and has been
utilized successfully in several high-risk occurrences. Currently commanded by Captain Carl Lamb, the team is lead in
operations by its Team Leader and Assistant Team Leader which are assigned to the entry portion of the team. The S.W.A.T.
has attended many trainings and has been trained by several different agencies to include the Austin, Texas SWAT Team.
All entry team members are routinely trained
in the functions, operations, and effects of the equipment that they are provided. This includes tactical
rifle and handgun training, explosive and distractionary devices, chemical irritant deployment, covert and overt tactical
movement, rescue, defensive hand-to-hand tactics, and less-lethal options and tactics. The team also vigorously
maintains its training and certification in meth lab entries.
Separate
from the entry officers of the team, the S.W.A.T. unit has the advantage of deploying certified
sharp-shooters . The sharp-shooters are used for long-range defense of the team and victims, and also for long-range
observation of the objective prior to the team's arrival. These two officers were trained and certified by
FBI and IPD instructors at a training hosted by the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.
Entry Team Members are routinely trained in the functions, operations, and effects of

The Negotiators
are used in barricaded subject and hostage situations. They will speak with the offender to negotiate terms of
surrender and release of hostages. Negotiators are important to any team due to at times being able to deescalate
and resolve a volatile situation without having to deploy the entry portion of the team.
Being a
necessary entity in the Seymour Police Department, this group operates under a strict guideline of operations in which
each officer involved is extremely familiar with. The use and deployment of this team is always the last
resort in any situation and is only utilized after a guideline for threat analysis has been followed
and evaluated.
