Followingis an explanation of Misdemeanor Citations, State Infraction Citations, City Ordinance Citations and the procedures involved with each:

A State Infraction Citation is a traffic citation which involves the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.  A citation is issued with a separate form explaining the payment schedule for each type of infraction.  The citation is forwarded to the court which will in-turn forward the citation issuance and status to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles .  The incident is then recorded on your driving record and the appropriate amount of points are accessed to your license.  Infraction citations are payable at the Jackson County Superior Court Building located at 1420 Corporate Way, Seymour, IN 47274.

A City Ordinance Violation is a violation of an ordinance provided by the City of Seymour.  In most cases these ordinances are mirror images of state statutes, but are enforced by local penalty.  City ordinance violations are payable at the Seymour Police Department Records Division which is located at 220 North Chestnut Street, Seymour, IN 47274.  The citation is not forwarded to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles unless one wishes to contest it.  If the citation is contested, it will be forwarded to the Jackson County Superior Court.  Once the court receives the citation, the rules for the issuance of a state infraction citation will apply.

A Misdemeanor Citation is a non-custodial arrest for a misdemeanor crime.  An officer has the discretion in some cases to issue a violator a summons to court in the form of a citation.  The officer chooses this action as an alternative means of arrest instead of transporting and releasing custody of the offender to the Jackson County Jail.  In some cases the citation will provide a court date at which time the offender must appear at the Jackson County Superior Court (1420 Corporate Way, Seymour, IN 47274).  Otherwise, the offender will receive a mailing from the court providing a court date.  NOTE:  It is your responsibility to provide the arresting officer with the correct contact information.  Failure to do so will result in the issuance of a warrant for your arrest for failing to appear upon your assigned court date.
